tHE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE OLD TESTAMENT

The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament

I believe that we all have to come to God through Christ, but God deals with the OT elect

differently then He does the NT Bride of Christ. There are numerous verses in the OT,

though none in the NT, that show The Holy Spirit being removed from the faithful and

sometimes coming upon the faithful more then once. Here are a few.

Num 11:17 & Num 11:25 Show us the Lord removing part of His spirit from Moses and

placing Him on others.

Num 11:17 And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the spirit

which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the

people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone

Num 11:25 And the LORD came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the

spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that,

when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease.

In Judges 11:25 we have the Holy Spirit coming upon Samson three times. If the Spirit

hadn’t been removed He wouldn’t have had to come upon him and upon him and upon

him (Samson), then leaving him.

Judges 14:5 - 6 Then went Samson down, and his father and his mother, to Timnath, and

came to the vineyards of Timnath: and, behold, a young lion roared against him. And the

Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a kid,

and he had nothing in his hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.

Judges 14:19 And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he went down to

Ashkelon, and slew thirty men of them, and took their spoil, and gave change of garments

unto them which expounded the riddle. And his anger was kindled, and he went up to his

father’s house.

Then again the Spirit came upon Samson in Judges 15:14 And when he came unto Lehi,

the Philistines shouted against him: and the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him,

The Lord departed from Samson.

Judges 16:20 And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of

his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist

not that the LORD was departed from him.

Then to Saul twice before He was removed:

1Sa 10:10 And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met

him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.

1Sa 11:6 And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his

anger was kindled greatly.

1Sa 16:14 But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the

LORD troubled him.

The Spirit of the Lord went from:

1 Kings 22:24 But Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah went near, and smote Micaiah on the

cheek, and said, Which way went the Spirit of the LORD from me to speak unto thee?

Even David feared that The Lord would remove His Spirit:

Pslm 51:11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.

Resting upon, not permanently residing in:

Isa 11:2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and

understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of

the LORD;

Why was The Spirit of The Lord upon Isaiah? Because he had a job to do.

Isa 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to

preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to

proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

YBIC,

Ken
